The Riddle of Shelby Lake

“I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about who I am, because I don’t know where I came from. I’m a mystery to myself.”

That’s what Deputy Shelby Lake tells us at the beginning of my novel THE DEEP, DEEP SNOW. In addition to wrestling with the disappearance of a young boy, Shelby also wrestles with her own past. She was left on a doorstep when she was just a baby, and she never knew the identity of her mother — or why she was abandoned. Those questions have always haunted her.

Shelby’s riddle lingers over THE DEEP, DEEP SNOW, which was an Edgar Award finalist and a New York Times bestseller. Now the answer to the riddle is here.

THE URSULINA tells the story of Shelby’s mother, a woman named Rebecca Colder. When she was just a girl, Rebecca came face to face with what she believed to be a mythical beast called The Ursulina…a monster like Bigfoot or Sasquatch. Ever since, she’s been obsessed with finding the Ursulina again. That quest will become enmeshed with the struggle of Rebecca’s job, life, and marriage — and it will lead her inexorably to the most excruciating choice a mother can make.

This novel may be the most emotional story I’ve ever written. I hope you enjoy the tale of Rebecca and The Ursulina. It’s available now exclusively from Audible — with amazing narration by actress January LaVoy — and the print and e-book editions will follow on February 1.

Something Special

I love to see this Bookreporter.com review of INFINITE: “It is so rare to have a psychological thriller that not only completely succeeds…but also plays with your heartstrings, leaving behind an incredibly memorable reading experience. INFINITE is something special, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.”
You can find the whole review here. The reviewer, Ray Palen, really captures what I was trying to do with this novel — write a very, very different thriller that has all the twists and turns of my other books, but is an emotional novel of redemption at its core. To me, as Ray says, it’s something special. I hope you come along for the ride!

INFINITE

It’s here…my new stand-alone thriller INFINITE is available now in hardcover, paperback, e-book, and audio!

WHAT EARLY READERS ARE SAYING

“Wow…hands down the best thing you have written and I love your work.”
“I could not put it down! What a great ride”
“Absolutely brilliant”
“Captivating, enchanting, surreal, original, spellbinding, fascinating”

This is the most unusual story I’ve ever told — but also a classic Brian Freeman thriller. It’s full of twists and suspense to keep you turning the pages. It’s also a very human story of redemption, as Dylan Moran tries to reclaim his life from the mistakes of his past.

My Personal Favorite

Readers have waited a long time for a print edition of my Audible Original THE DEEP, DEEP SNOW. It’s finally here! The paperback is available right now (and, of course, it’s still available in e-book and audio). Click here to find it on Amazon.

For years, you’ve asked me: What’s your favorite novel of all the books you’ve written? That’s always been a hard question for me to answer, because after 22 novels, I love each of my stories in a different way. But THE DEEP, DEEP SNOW may well be my personal favorite among my books.

This small-town mystery has a heroine I love – a young sheriff’s deputy named Shelby Lake – and an emotional core that left me in tears when I was writing it. It’s the story of the disappearance of a ten-year-old boy, an event that ripples through the lives of everyone in Mittel County. But it’s also a story of fathers and daughters, of friendships and memories, of good intentions gone terribly wrong.

I hope you fall in love with Shelby and the people around her the way I did – and when you read it, I think you’ll see why this particular book has a very special place in my heart.

The Deep, Deep Snow

“The first thing you should know about me is that I believe in signs. Omens. Premonitions. I grew up believing that things happen for a reason. That’s the only way to explain why I’m alive.”

WEST 57: Now on Kindle Unlimited

For the first time ever, my novel WEST 57 is available in Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited program. So if you’re a member, you can put it on your device and read it for free!

WEST 57 is nothing like my thrillers. It’s dramatic and intriguing, but also filled with humor and romance. It’s a follow-up to a book called THE AGENCY that I co-wrote several years ago under the pseudonym “Ally O’Brien.” Both books feature female first-person narrators and settings in New York and London.

We got great reviews from critics and readers alike. People Magazine called THE AGENCY “entertaining…witty…a delight,” and Romantic Times gave it four stars and called it “one fantastic novel.” Booklist said WEST 57 had “just the right mix of zany humor and sexy romance.”

So if you want to explore the “other side” of Brian Freeman, this is your chance! Here I am, channeling my inner woman.
