This may be my favorite story of how someone became a long-time fan of my books! From an e-mail I got yesterday:
“I am a retired police officer of 30 years. Nelson DeMille is one of our residents, who I have met many times. When he releases a new book, Nelson usually supplies some of our officers with a signed copy.
With that said, many years ago a burglary alarm went off in Nelson’s house, and while my partner and I were checking the exterior of his home, we came upon an unsecure rear door. Our procedure is to check the entire interior to make sure everything is in order. While checking the master bedroom, on Nelson’s night table was a book titled IMMORAL! Upon completion of checking the residence, securing the rear door and notifying Nelson DeMille of the outcome, my partner and I researched the book titled Immoral, and figured that if Nelson DeMille was reading it, maybe it was something that we would enjoy. I bought a copy of Immoral, and the rest is history!!”
Soooo…a big thank you to my reader John for sharing that story (and a big thanks to Nelson DeMille, too!). After all, many is the time I’ve had one of Nelson’s books on MY nightstand!

Happy New Year! It’s going to be a busy year for book launches.

We are one month away from the February 1 launch of the hardcover, paperback, and e-book editions of THE URSULINA. This is the prequel to my Edgar Award finalist and New York Times bestseller THE DEEP, DEEP SNOW — hmm, or is it a follow-up novel? Or is it both? All I will tell you is that these two books fit together hand-in-glove, and they may well be my two personal favorites of everything I’ve written.

Best of 2021

Kirkus Reviews is out today with their list of the Best Mysteries and Thrillers of 2021. Thirteen books selected out of hundreds and hundreds published…and there’s my thriller INFINITE on the list.

Nice company to be keeping. The list includes amazing books by authors like Stephen King, Karin Slaughter, S.A. Cosby, Brad Parks, and Colson Whitehead, among others. (Click here to see the whole list.)

Adding to the thrill for me: This is the second year in a row I’ve made the Kirkus list of best thrillers. Last year my first Jason Bourne novel THE BOURNE EVOLUTION was on the roster. So two wildly different books in two years. It’s a hell of an honor.

 

Ludlum and Me

So I got a package in the mail from Random House yesterday. It turned out to be an author’s copy of the large print edition of my new Jason Bourne novel, THE BOURNE TREACHERY.

It’s great to see that large print editions are still around. They’re a little more rare these days, because many people who want larger font sizes have turned to e-books. But a lot of readers still love to have that physical book in their hands — and that’s great.

Of course, what really struck me was the back cover. There were two photographs side by side — mine and Robert Ludlum’s. I’ve been tackling Jason Bourne for a couple of years now, but even so, I never fail to get a little shiver up my spine when I see me and Ludlum on the same book cover. He was one of my favorite authors growing up, and Marcia can attest that the latest Ludlum novel was always on my Christmas list.

Now, all these years later, it’s an amazing thrill to be carrying on his legacy. If you’d told me when I was reading THE BOURNE IDENTITY in 1980 that I’d be writing Jason Bourne novels forty years later, I would have thought you were crazy. But here we are. Enjoy the new Bourne book!
